National Tank Truck Carriers’ prestigious North American safety contest last year featured three repeat winners in Groendyke Transport, G&D Trucking/Hoffman Transportation, and Gemini Motor Transport, who’ve combined for 15 championships. But there’s a good chance at least one first-time winner emerges this year.
The association revealed the 19 finalists in its 2024 Competitive Safety Contest on Wednesday, and only five of those Grand award recipients from Round 1 previously hoisted a Heil trophy: Trimac Transportation in the Harvison division, for carriers who traveled more than 15 million miles in 2024; Lacy’s Express and Wynne Transport Services in the Sutherland division, for carriers with less than 15 million miles; and LSP Transport and Gemini in the private-fleet division.
Trimac won in 2002 and 2007, when there was still only one division, and again in 2019; LSP won as a for-hire carrier in 2020; Wynne won in 2014; Lacy’s prevailed in 2021; and Gemini, the primary fuel hauler for Love’s Travel Stops, won in 2017 as a for-hire carrier, and again in 2022 and 2023—the first two years with a private-fleet division.
NTTC will reveal the three 2024 safety champions April 24 during its 2025 Annual Conference.
The safety contest is open to all tank truck for-hire-carrier and private-fleet NTTC members in good standing with the association. Carriers and private fleets compete in floating mileage-class categories based on relative size. The contest is conducted in two rounds to determine the safest carriers and fleet. In Round 1, the association recognizes Grand, Honor, and Merit award winners in their respective classes. Each division includes five mileage classes evenly distributed by the number of participating companies. In the for-hire contest, Classes 1-5 are in the Harvison division, with Class 1 as the highest mileage class, and Classes 6-10 are in the Sutherland division, with Class 10 as the lowest.
All Round 1 placers possess the lowest accident frequency in their class, as verified by independent auditors. Grand award winners move on to Round 2, where judges critique them across nine areas: Driver qualification, driver training, driver management, worker safety program, accident and incident response, safety and training organization, vehicle and tank inspection, vehicle and tank maintenance, and industry engagement.
