Werts Welding & Tank Service is celebrating 65 years of serving the tank trailer industry.

Robert and Verna Werts founded the family-owned and -operated company in 1957 in Wood River, Illinois (a suburb of St. Louis). Their son, Dwight Werts, joined the company in 1977 and took over as president and CEO in 1994. Dwight’s son, sales manager Nick Werts, now represents the third generation of the Werts family leading the operation.

The tank truck and trailer parts and equipment supplier also boasts fully accredited “R” stamp maintenance and repair shops in Wood River and Birmingham, Alabama. Werts renovated and expanded the Birmingham location in 2019 to include five fully enclosed inside bays, four canopy bays, and two outside bays. Other improvements included a new fabrication area, brighter LED lighting, and updated offices.

“This (location) had record growth over the past five years, but it could have done even better with a more up-to-date facility,” Dwight Werts said at the time. “We knew it needed to be updated, and we had talked about doing it for years.

“The time was finally right.”

Previous growth included opening a branch in 1991 in San Antonio, Texas. The Birmingham location opened in 1997, along with new branches in Atlanta, Georgia, and Tampa, Florida. Werts added a sixth location in 2003 in Des Moines, Iowa; and expanded into Billing, Montana, in 2011, and Commerce City, Colorado, in 2013.

The company was recognized as one of the oldest businesses in Wood River during a 60th-anniversary celebration in 2017.

“Werts Welding & Tank Service realizes that without our customers and long-term employees, none of this would be possible,” the company said.

“Please except our deepest gratitude to all who have made these 65 years possible.”
