Atlantic Bulk Carrier receives three outstanding safety performance awards
Atlantic Bulk Carrier, a tank truck carrier based in Providence Forge VA, received the Pacesetter award from Raffles Insurance Ltd. This award recognizes one member from among more than 300 members of the group captive for innovative risk-control programs.
Atlantic Bulk abandoned traditional safety management practices in favor of individual performance reviews and predictive modeling. This approach allowed Atlantic Bulk to cut its accident frequency by more than fifty percent and almost totally eliminated lost work time due to injuries.
Atlantic Bulk also received the Fleet Safety Excellence Award for the lowest reportable accident frequency among members traveling more than nine million miles. The commercial drivers for Atlantic Bulk Carrier logged more than 14.6 million miles during 2013 and the fleet of service vehicles added more miles to that figure. Atlantic Bulk Carrier finished 2013 with only four DOT-reportable crashes.
J Ward Best, vice-president of Atlantic Bulk Carrier, was named Risk Control Manager of the Year. As head of the safety department, Best crafted programs to identify and address the root causes of crashes and injuries. These programs helped create a safer environment for the company’s drivers, mechanics, and office employees.
Atlantic Bulk Carrier is the largest tank-truck carrier based in Virginia. The family-owned and operated trucking company based outside of Richmond was founded in 1971 and now operates 175 tractors throughout the Southeast.
The awards were presented by Raffles at its board of directors meeting in September. Raffles is a captive insurance program composed of businesses from different industries throughout the United States.
