Netherlands-based Schenk Tanktransport recently acquired Suttons Tankers, a U.K.-based road tanker operation previously owned by the Sutton and Broadhurst families.

The transaction included Suttons Tankers Holdings Limited, and its trading subsidiary, Suttons Tankers Limited, the companies reported. The Sutton family retained ownership of global ISO tank operation Suttons International.

“After nearly a century in the road transport industry, originally founded by our grandfather, Alf Sutton, we are immensely proud to see Suttons Tankers positioned to grow further under Schenk’s ownership,” Suttons International CEO John Sutton said in a news release. “Schenk’s values and heritage align closely with ours, making them the right choice to lead the Tankers business into its next phase.

“This sale also allows us to sharpen our focus on the future of Suttons International, a family-owned, globally recognized brand in ISO-tank logistics.”

Schenk specializes in the transportation of liquid food, chemicals, gas, and biofuels; and operates across several European locations, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. The acquisition of Suttons Tankers enables Schenk to extend its reach geographically and across new product sectors.

“We are excited to welcome Suttons Tankers into the Schenk Group,” Schenk CEO Marcel Claessen said. “This acquisition not only strengthens our market position, but also allows both companies to use each other’s strengths and knowledge that will allow us to offer enhanced services to our customers across Europe.

“We are confident that this partnership will drive growth and innovation.”

Following the sale, Suttons Tankers will operate as Schenk UK, the companies stated.

While the name will change, the organization will continue to operate with its current leadership team, including Michael Cundy as managing director, Chris Orger as finance director, Chrisi Lloyd-Roberts as operations director, and Karoline Campbell as HR director, ensuring continuity for customers.

“Over the last 10 years we have seen significant growth and development of the Suttons Tankers business, always with the leadership and support of the Suttons Tankers shareholders and non-executive team,” Cundy said.

“We have a business that is strategically placed to deliver further long-term growth and exceptional customer service in our chosen product sectors.”

Claessen, who brings “a wealth” of industry expertise and a strong track record of driving growth in the logistics sector, will oversee combined business operations with the goal of unlocking further opportunities for Schenk UK, both in the United Kingdom and across Europe.

“Our acquisition by Schenk will serve to support this long-term commitment to our markets and represents an exciting next chapter in the proud history of our business,” Cundy added. “The progress we have made and the opportunities we now have for the future would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of Suttons fantastic workforce and the support of our customers and suppliers.”

Suttons Tankers has been a leading name in U.K. road tanker transport for over 100 years. Headquartered in Widnes, the company employs approximately 875 people and has a turnover of €140 million.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the entire Tankers team for their dedication over the years,” Sutton concluded. “We are confident they will thrive within the Schenk family, while we concentrate our efforts on further expanding and strengthening Suttons International to better serve our global customers.”
