Powell inspires students at FFA Convention

Nov. 13, 2024
NTTC's 2023-24 Driver of the Year shares his experience working with future drivers as part of the Next Gen Trucking contingent in Indianapolis

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend the 97th Annual National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, where I discussed careers in transportation with the youth of America in the Next Generation in Trucking Association booth.

Our contingent included 15 professionals with varying industry roles, and the Next Gen Trucking exhibit featured diesel technician and driving simulators. Watching students, and even some faculty members, attempt to navigate the steer-tire blowout simulation was a blast, and with 23 years of experience as a tractor-trailer operator, I can tell you this technology presents an authentic, real-life scenario. Students waited in a line that stretched across the convention floor to compete against their peers—and showcase their skills.

My favorite part of the event was interacting with students who not only are passionate about becoming professional drivers, but also ready to take the next step toward working as an owner-operator. After owning a truck for the last 18 years, this topic is near and dear to me. I had several in-depth conversations with these individuals, including one that lasted until the convention-center lights dimmed. Students asked very specific and concise questions, proving they’d put thought and research into chasing a lifelong dream. Some were only scratching the surface, but others already owned a truck and were eagerly awaiting graduation day. It’s truly an inspiring event that always puts a smile on my face, and it’s humbling to be able to pass my experience on to the next generation.

I also met people in the FFA chapter at Patterson High School (California), which is the pilot school for Next Gen Trucking, and co-founder Dave Dein. I spoke to one Patterson student who already had his CDL and was ready to join the workforce.

Kuddos to this organization. I’ve seen the impact they’ve had on many young adults firsthand.

I encourage you to support Next Gen Trucking’s efforts to increase industry awareness, educate young people about trucking opportunities, and ultimately help secure our most valuable resource—new drivers.

The FFA Convention is a staple on my calendar, and I look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
