Interstate 10 in Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin is closed between Lafayette and Baton Rouge after a gas well blew out near one of the highway's bridges

Interstate 10 in Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin is closed between Lafayette and Baton Rouge after a gas well blew out near one of the highway's bridges, according to Louisiana officials.

The gas leak occurred November 15 as representatives with Bridas Energy were drilling to establish a new well. In doing so, pressure built up and essentially blew the line. Emergency personnel were notified and about an hour later the natural gas leak ignited. No injuries were reported, according to the Louisiana State Police.

Traffic is being diverted from I-10 westbound at exit 151 (Hwy 415) to US Hwy 190 west to I-49 south back onto I-10 West.

Traffic on I-10 eastbound is being diverted onto I-49 (Lafayette) northbound to US Hwy 190 east to Hwy 415 south back to I-10 eastbound. This closure is expected to remain in effect until early December.
