SOUTHERN Bulk Carriers Day avoided rain for 10 years, but the luck finally ran out. Held at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, the 2000 event was both hot and wet, but that didn't seem to deter attendance.
Even with the bad weather, more than 2,500 fleet personnel, shippers, and suppliers turned out. The one-day exhibition spotlighted approximately 120 tank trucks and trailers and 72 booth displays. The Texas Tank Truck Carriers Association Inc (TTTCA) sponsored the program.
Houston's Mayor Lee P Brown proclaimed the day of the show Southern Bulk Carriers Day in Houston.
A barbecue lunch was sponsored by Trimac/DSI Transports Inc, Cummins Southern Plains Inc, and Performance Truck Inc.
The Southern Bulk Carriers Day Committee was led by co-chairmen William C George, Groendyke Transport Inc; Andrew Zaleski, Trimac Transportation Inc; and Thomas G Theriault, Transport Service Co.
Contest judges were Capt Wesley Johnson, retired from the Texas Department of Public Safety; Sgt William Miller, Louisiana State Police; Gary DeLozier, Pasadena (Texas) Police Department; T C Perrin, Houston Police Department; Tom Hartman, Texas Department of Public Safety; and Sherman Collins, Lufkin (Texas) Chief of Police.
The 2001 Southern Bulk Carriers Day is scheduled for October 4, with the location still to be determined. Further information will be published in Modern Bulk Transporter as soon as it is available.
