The average price for diesel fuel nationwide jumped 7.5 cents to $2.625 a gallon, its third consecutive weekly increase, according to US Department of Energy information.

This advance put trucking’s main fuel $1.728 below the same week a year ago, just a few weeks after it reached a record high of $4.764 a gallon July 14, 2008.

The latest increase marks the largest since diesel surged 14.6 cents June 8, in the middle of a seven-week run of price rises.

The least costly region for diesel fuel is the Rocky Mountain area at $2.573, and the most expensive is California at $2.842.
