ACT says October used Class 8 same dealer sales climb in December

Jan. 25, 2017

Used Class 8 truck same dealer sales volumes ended 2016 one percent above November, and up 11% year-over-year compared to last December. The positive close to the year marked three consecutive months of year-over-year increases, according to the latest release of the State of the Industry: US Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research.

“The uptick in sales was enough to push 2016 year-to-date volumes a fraction of a point, 0.3%, higher than 2015’s total,” said Steve Tam, ACT’s vice-president. “Once the dust has settled, we believe 2016 used Class 8 truck sales will see a small gain over 2015, at around 270,000 units.”

Used Class 8 exports also climbed. Export volumes were up 74% year-over-year compared to November 2015. “This marks five months in a row of year-over-year improvements, and pushes year-to-date totals 10% higher than the comparable period in 2015,” Tam said. “With one month of 2016 exports yet to be reported, November year-to-date volumes have already surpassed 2015’s total.”

The report from ACT provides data on the average selling price, miles, and age based on a sample of industry data. In addition, the report provides the average selling price for top-selling Class 8 models for each of the major truck OEMs--Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo).
