In May, the index equaled 144.1 (2000=100), up from 135.3 in April.</p> <p>Compared with May 2016, the SA index increased 4.8%, which was the largest year-over-year gain since November. In April, the index contracted 0.8% on a year-over-year basis. Year-to-date, compared with the same five months in 2016, the index is up 0.9%. In May, a long month and a rising build rate combined to drive NA Class 8 production to an 18-month high.</p> <p>&ldquo;Annualized, May&rsquo;s production rate equals a full-year production of 263k units,&rdquo; said Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst at ACT Research.</p> <p>With orders softening as truck build ramps up, Class 8 backlogs dropped nearly 7,000 units from April. This marked the strongest three-month reading since the third quarter of 2014.</p> <p>All of the purchases forecast will be for new equipment.
