The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel nationwide fell half a cent to $2.956 a gallon, marking the sixth decline in seven weeks, according to US Department of Energy information.
Diesel’s downturn followed the previous week’s 3.3-cent increase and left trucking’s main fuel 34.8 cents higher than the same week in 2009. It is now 17.1 cents below this year’s high of $3.127, recorded May 10. From mid-February through that date, the price rose 11 of 12 weeks, gaining 37.1 cents. Diesel’s $2.928 price of two weeks ago was its lowest since March 15.
Regions including the Lower Atlantic, Midwest, Gulf Coast, and Rocky Mountain fell, while the East Coast, West Coast, and California reported higher prices, led by 2.2 cents to $3.147 in California. The cheapest diesel remained along the Gulf Coast at $2.893 a gallon.
