The New England Fuel Institute (NEFI) is reminding fuel dealers that they may be required to register and pay fees in certain states where they formerly were not required to comply with unified carrier registration.
NEFI reported in its weekly e-newsletter, NEON, that it has received reports of fuel dealers being cited for failure to comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's unified carrier registration (UCR) regulations. The system was created by Congress in 2005, but modified in 2008 when a new UCR program replaced the former single state registration system that formerly applied to for-hire interstate motor carriers.
Now, participating states require registration and payment of fees (based on fleet size). Additionally, implementation may vary by state, as states are permitted to expand the program to include intrastate transporters, including for-hire and private petroleum transporters who never cross state lines.
