Wash rack boilers face increasing scrutiny in parts of the United States that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated as non-attainment areas under the Clean Air Act, according to Joe Brown, The WCM Group.

Most of the designated locations are in major metropolitan areas, and the EPA objective is to reduce the NOX levels that contribute to ozone and other air pollutants.

Speaking April 3 during the National Tank Truck Carriers annual Tank Cleaning Seminar in Las Vegas NV, Brown said that any boiler 50-horsepower or higher is covered by EPA NOX restrictions. Flue gas recirculation systems are the least expensive way to lower NOX on an existing boiler. He cautioned that low-NOX burners are a less desirable option because they are difficult to set up properly.
