FMCSA to visit hazmat carriers in further security effort

About 1,500 hazardous materials carriers will be revisited by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) personnel as part of an effort to improve security in transportation. William Quade, FMCSA hazmat division chief, said the order the carriers will be visited in has yet to be determined, but the visits will focus on handling certain chemicals and munitions.

After the events of September 11, FMCSA personnel conducted visits at more than 30,000 hazmat carriers during a six-month period to advise them on appropriate security precautions, according to FMCSA acting administrator, Annette Sandberg, who discussed the statistics January 13 at a Transportation Research Board meeting. She said the number of visits paid earlier to hazmat carriers by state agencies brings the total to more than 40,000.
