Emission-control rules impact new truck orders

Dec 9, 2003 12:00 PM

A decline in new truck orders in 2002 was due to federal engine emission-control regulations, according to a survey sponsored by the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association (HDMA) and fielded by Markinetics Inc. The emissions-control regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) went into effect in 2002.

Only one-fifth of fleet-decision makers ordered new trucks in 2002, compared to those who ordered new trucks from 1994 through 1999, according to the report. The data also indicated that despite a sour economy, truck operators continue to specify certain products by brands. HDMA represents Class 4 through Class 8 motor vehicle manufacturers.
