PHMSA, FRA to review tankcar safety

The Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) have scheduled a public meeting May 31-June 1 in Washington DC to address safe transportation of hazardous materials in railroad tankcars, according to information published in the Federal Register May 24.

PHMSA and FRA are initiating a comprehensive review of design and operational factors that affect rail tankcar safety after reviewing cases in the last several years involving accident in which the railcar was breached and product lost on the ground or into the atmosphere.
