FMCSA proposes medical examiner registry

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is proposing to establish and maintain a National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners, according to information published in the Federal Register December 1.
The rule (49 CFR Parts 390 and 391) also will require that all medical examiners who conduct medical examinations for interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers complete certain training concerning FMCSA physical qualification standards, pass a test to verify an understanding of those standards, and maintain competence by periodic training and testing.
Following establishment of the registry and a transition period, FMCSA would accept as valid only medical examiners' certificates issued by medical examiners listed on the registry.
