Hazmat permit renewal gets 60-day adjustment

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is reminding carriers that haul hazardous materials that they now are allowed to renew their hazmat safety permit (MCS 150B) 60 days before the permit expires.
Previously, a renewal application was considered an update if received more than 30 days before the permit expiration. Carriers may continue to operate under an existing hazmat safety permit until they are required to renew according to the schedule in 49 CFR 390.19. Carriers are encouraged to use the 60-day grace period before the current permit expires to correct any non-compliance issues that may impact renewal, according to the FMCSA information.
The change, effective March 31, will be stated in the Biennial Update Letter mailed to carriers approximately 60 days prior to the renewal schedule. More information about the renewal requirements and access to application forms are available online at fmcsa.dot.gov.
