NHTSA proposes air-brake amendment

Dec 20, 2005 2:33 PM

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is proposing to amend the agency's air-brake standard (49 CFR Part 571) in order to reduce the stopping distance of truck tractors by 20 percent to 30 percent, according to information published in the Federal Register December 15.

NHTSA requests comment concerning improving the braking performance of other types of heavy vehicles, for example trailers, straight trucks, and buses. The agency also may address improved braking performance for these other vehicles in a future rulemaking, according to the information.
