Transport Canada will publish new Canadian driver hours-of-service regulations November 16, 2005, according to information from the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA). The rules become effective January 1, 2007.

The Transport Canada announcement signals that the rules have been finalized at the federal level and now need to be mirrored in provincial regulations to provide a uniform regime across Canada, CTA said.

CTA expects the regulations will include 13 hours daily driving, the 36-hour reset; 48-hour averaging of off-duty time; and cycles of 70 hours in seven days and 120 in 14.

In light of recent developments in the United States, one of the most important provisions will be the ability for drivers to split off-duty time in a sleeper berth, CTA said.

The new regulations are scheduled to be posted November 16, 2005, on the Canada Gazette Website.
