Huntsman International LLC and its propylene oxide transport partners showed off a new dedicated fleet September 2 during a special event at the chemical company’s administrative headquarters in The Woodlands TX. The tractors and trailers were configured specifically for inter-plant movements of propylene oxide in the Gulf Coast region, and the vehicle specifications offer enhanced operational, safety, and “green” characteristics. Transport partners include Slay Transportation Co Inc and its equipment vendors—Polar Tank Trailer LLC and Freightliner.

The tractors and trailers were configuredPolar built a hybrid DOT407 chemical trailer with an 11,000-lb tare weight. The uninsulated stainless steel tank trailer holds 8,500 gallons and can be filled to 95% capacity.Emission control hardware for the Freightliner Cascadia’s 2010 Detroit Diesel engine is mounted on the passenger side. Freightliner put the truck batteries between the frame rails to leave more space for components, such as product pumps and hydraulics.A single 120-gallon fuel tank was mounted on the driver side, and the 13-gallon urea tank for the selective catalytic reduction system is in front of the fuel tank.
A key tractor safety feature is Meritor WABCO’s Onguard collision safety system with forward-looking, radar-based adaptive cruise control and active braking.Michelin widebase single tires, Meritor SteeLite brake drums, and Alcoa aluminum wheels contribute significant weight savings to the propylene oxide trailer-trailer rigs.Girard vents are part of the closed-loop loading and unloading system on the tank trailers.Unloading hardware includes a Betts internal valve as a<br />primary, FNW ball valve as a secondary, and an OPW<br />Kamvalok dry disconnect fitting.
