Another gallon of motor fuel. The people to help sell it. Those are the essential ingredients in Offen Petroleum’s evolving fuel-delivery operation, which this year surpassed 2 billion gallons of annual fuel distribution. Everything else is a means to Offen’s ultimate end—a 10-billion-gallon business.

Colonial Fuel & Lubricant Services tank trucks load ship fuel for a vessel in Jacksonville, Fla. CFLS supplies gasoline and diesel, in addition to diesel exhaust fluid and lubricants.

The fuel supply business looks much different today than it did in 1921, when Raymond Demere founded the company that became the Colonial Group while endeavoring to energize the new internal combustion engines helping motorized vehicles quickly surpass horse-drawn wagons as the primary means of transport.

Oilmen’s, which had 14 employees when John P. Faris Jr., bought the business in 1978, now boasts more than 100 employees, who this year are helping the company celebrate its 70th anniversary.

New technology in fuel storage tanks offers remote tank monitoring systems. These systems allow operators to track the tank’s inventory levels and location at any time, helping users take control of fuel supplies and avoid downtime associated with a depleted fuel supply.
