PUCO to continue security visits of hazmat carriers

May 7, 2002 12:00 PM

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) will continue its on-site visits to ensure the security of hazardous materials transportation on Ohio’s roadways. PUCO specialists will continue to review security talking points with motor carrier representatives during every compliance review involving hazardous materials carriers or shippers. There are approximately 5,000 motor carriers authorized to transport hazardous materials from, to, through, and within Ohio.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration initiated the sensitivity security visits on September 26, 2001 following the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington DC. PUCO specialists conducted 906 on-site security visits of hazardous materials carriers in Ohio from September 26 to December 31, 2001.
