Chemical Logistics Tops $170 Billion Worldwide

Worldwide chemical sales have reached $1.7 trillion a year. More than $170 billion is spent on the effort needed to move those chemicals through the logistics chain, and transportation accounts for 35% to 40% of the process.

These were some of the conclusions in a presentation by Gary Williams, president of Exel Americas Chemical Sector. He spoke May 8 at the National Tank Truck Carriers annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.

He told tank truck carriers that outsourcing of logistics management by chemical companies will continue as part of an ongoing effort to focus on core strengths. “They are using outsourcing as a way to build shareholder value,” he said. “This is a trend that will continue.
