Jul 18, 2006 8:41 AM

There were 149 operable refineries in the United States (excluding Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands) with a total crude distillation capacity of 17.3 million barrels per calendar day, and 18.3 million barrels per stream day as of January 1, 2006, according to information from the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA).

The statistics are part of an upcoming publications by NPRA, 2006 US Refining & Storage Capacity Report, containing data supplied by the Department of Energy on the crude oil capacity of petroleum refiners.

Of the total operable refineries, 142 refineries were operating on January 1, 2006, with operating capacity listed at 16.4 million barrels per calendar day. Additionally, idled refining capacity was 800,000 barrels per calendar day higher than on January 1, 2005, primarily due to the lingering impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The full report will be available on the NPRA site at npra.org under the category of publications/statistical reports.
