President signs highway bill

Aug 11, 2005 9:38 AM

President Bush signed the $286.4-billion highway bill August 10, confirming congressional action after an almost two-year debate in the House and Senate.

"If we want people working in America, we've got to make sure our highways and roads are modern," the President said while signing the bill during a trip to Illinois. "We've got to bring up this transportation system into the 21st century."

Congress finally agreed July 29 on the six-year highway bill.

The decision provides funding for transportation and safety programs through 2009.
