Jun 25, 2004 12:14 PM

The House of Representatives has approved a one-month extension for federal funding for highway and transit programs through July 31, 2004, according to information from the House Transportation Committee. Authorization for funding is due to expire on June 30.

The legislation (HR 4635) was approved June 23 by a 418 to 0 vote. The legislation will continue funding for highway construction, highway safety, transit, motor carrier, and surface transportation research programs at the levels approved in the FY 2004 budget resolution.

The national highway and transit funding bill expired September 30, 2003, but has been extended on three previous occasions. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.

The House-Senate Conference Committee also met June 23 regarding the six-year highway and transit funding legislation (HR 3550), and is scheduled to meet again July 7. Forty-two provisions were agreed to by the conference committee.
