Intermodal chassis responsibility on providers

Aug 18, 2005 11:17 AM

Included in the recently-approved highway reauthorization legislation is a measure that places primary responsibility for the intermodal chassis on equipment providers.

It also establishes necessary and prudent federal requirements covering the systematic maintenance, repair, inspection, and shared responsibility of intermodal equipment, according to the American Trucking Associations (ATA).

In addition, the measure provides a clear direction and framework to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for use during the ensuing agency review and promulgation process, which is expected to begin this fall.

The legislation was supported by ATA's Intermodal Motor Carriers Conference (IMCC), the Ocean Carriers Equipment Management Association (OCEMA), and the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
