The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) is lobbying the Canadian federal government to fund incentives for the penetration of the new smog-free trucks and add-on fuel efficiency devices and equipment such as auxiliary power units, wide-base single tires, and aerodynamic fairings, according to CTA information.

CTA supports financial incentives for using a heavy-duty truck with a 2007 or later model year engine, combined with fuel efficiency devices installed on both tractor and trailer.

CTA argued that the government’s approach so far with requiring 2007 engine emission standards has had the unintended effect of increasing greenhouse gas emissions since the new tractors are less fuel efficient than equipment already in operation. Additional fuel costs that the trucking industry must absorb or pass along to its customers is another result of the engine requirements, CTA said.

CTA also pointed out the increased cost to purchase and operate the 2007 vehicles has resulted in new heavy truck sales plummeting in Canada.
