Work to begin on hurricane-damaged bridges

Feb 6, 2006 8:39 AM

Work on the US Highway 90 bridges that span the St Louis Bay and Biloxi Bay in Mississippi is scheduled to begin as soon as possible, according to the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The highway and railroad bridges were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. A repaired railroad bridge is scheduled to open in early February.

DOT waived contracting rules to allow Mississippi officials to move forward with plans to hire contractors to rebuild the highway bridge and a similar bridge between Biloxi and Ocean Springs.

Repairs couldn’t begin on either of the bridges until much of the road was repaired between Gulfport and Biloxi so that construction crews could get to the bridges, DOT said.
