Ban reversed on hazmat transport in DC

A move to prohibit transportation of certain hazardous materials through the District of Columbia (DC) has been reversed by a federal appeals court order, according to information from CSX Transportation.
The railroad company had challenged the prohibition in the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
The higher court also instructed the lower court to enter a preliminary injunction prohibiting enforcement of the DC Council Act.
The initiative was primarily intended to block rail shipments of hazardous cargoes, such as flammable gases and explosives, within two miles of the Capitol building.
CSX said several federal agencies asked the courts to strike down the DC law, and the Surface Transportation Board has ruled that the law is preempted by federal statute.
