After removing motor carrier accident and safety evaluations and overall SafeStat scores from its Web site in late 2004, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is preparing to make the information available once more.

"We have been working on improving the data and are preparing to repost them to the SafeStat Web site," said Ian Grossman, FMCSA communications director.

A target date for the project has not been set.

The information was removed after concerns were voiced about their accuracy by federal agencies and the trucking industry about the accuracy of the data. Carriers could continue to access their individual information.

SafeStat (short for Motor Carrier Safety Status Measurement System) is an automated, data driven analysis system designed by FMCSA to combine current and historical carrier-based safety performance information to measure the relative (peer-to-peer) safety fitness of interstate commercial motor carriers and intrastate commercial motor carriers that transport hazardous materials.

This information includes federal and state data on crashes, roadside inspections, on-site compliance review results and enforcement history.

SafeStat enables FMCSA to quantify and monitor the safety status of individual motor carriers on a monthly basis and thereby focus enforcement resources on carriers posing the greatest potential safety risk, according to the agency's information.
