Leadership skills improve driver retention

Apr 11, 2006 12:54 PM

Applying good leadership skills and understanding drivers can help carriers improve driver retention rates.

Gary Putman of GS Putman and Associates and Randy Sheeler of F T Silfies said that money motivates drivers, but recognition also motivates them.

They made the comments at the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) Safety Seminar April 4-6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Carriers must "hire tough," which means maintaining high standards even though driver demand may tempt employers to do otherwise, Putman said.

Communicating with drivers so that they understand the demands of the job before they are hired is essential, Sheeler said.

Full coverage of the NTTC Safety Seminar will be in the June issue of Bulk Transporter.
