ACEEE reports takes look at fuel savings

Feb 2, 2006 8:59 AM

A substantial fuel savings could be achieved by trucks/trailers using existing conventional technologies that effect aerodynamic performance, according to a study by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

The ACEEE report, Reducing Oil Use Through Energy Efficiency: Opportunities Beyond Cars and Light Trucks, discusses efficiency measures beyond those directed at passenger vehicles and small trucks.

However, despite aerodynamic technologies designed to reduce fuel usage, tank trailers and tank trucks may not benefit to the same extent, the report said.

The study also supports reducing truck idling time in order to save on energy use.

The use of the technologies could yield savings of up to two-thirds of a million barrels per day by 2020, the ACEEE said.
