The average price of on-road diesel across the nation edged down almost three cents last week from the week before, registering at the pump at $2.851 per gallon, according to Department of Energy information.

The week before, diesel users were filling tanks at an average of $2.877 per gallon. Prices for low sulfur diesel and ultra low sulfur diesel also fell slightly. Low sulfur fuel was $2.811 per gallon, down just over three cents from the week before. Ultra low sulfur diesel was $2.863 per gallon, 2.4 cents less than the week before.

It's been a price roller coaster ride for the last two and a half years with prices generally edging up. Prices have varied from less than $2 per gallon in January of 2005 to around $3.10 per gallon later in that year. After the $3-per-gallon peak in 2005, prices have remained above the $2.40 mark and again rose over $3 per gallon last year.

So far this year, prices have wiggled up from about $2.40 per gallon to last week's $2.851 per gallon.
