Price of diesel fuel surges to seventh straight gain

In one of the steepest increases in recent months, the national average retail price of diesel climbed for a seventh consecutive week, rising 7.4 cents to $3.407, according to US Department of Energy information.
The national average price is 53.7 cents more than the same week in 2010 and is at the highest level since late October 2008, when the price was $3.488.
Prices rose dramatically in all regions, led by an 11-cent increase in the New England area of the East Coast, where prices gained 8.4 cents overall. The Gulf Coast increased 8.2 cents, while the Midwest rose 6.9 cents. The nation’s most expensive diesel continues to be in California at $3.562.
