Jan 21, 2010 1:58 PM

The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel nationwide fell for the first time in a month, dipping 0.9 cent to $2.87 a gallon, according to US Department of Energy information.

The downturn followed three straight increases in which diesel had jumped 15.3 cents. This decline left diesel 57.4 cents higher than the same week in 2009.

The cheapest place to purchase diesel is in the Rocky Mountain region at $2.827 per gallon, while New England is the most expensive area at $3.065.
