ATA freight forecast
reaches to 2020

Mar 18, 2009 4:26 PM

The US Freight Transportation Forecast to 2020 is now available from the American Trucking Associations (ATA).

To review the report's key findings and answer questions, ATA will conduct two webinars in April, one for ATA members (April 14) and another for non-members (April 16).

"We’re looking forward to going beyond the data tables and discussing what these numbers mean to fleets and other companies involved in the industry," said Bob Costello, ATA’s chief economist. "Knowing what segments of manufacturing, for example, have the largest potential for growth over the forecast period is key for making business decisions."

ATA and IHS Global Insight, a firm that provides economic and financial information available on countries, regions, and industries, have been teaming up for more than a decade to produce the report.

The forecast uses a 2008 statistical baseline and projects freight tonnage and revenue by mode to 2020, as well as the number of trucks that will be needed to move the freight. This year’s edition also includes historical data for all modes of freight dating back to 1990, and revised revenue and tonnage figures back to 2002. The live webinar, included with the purchase of the forecast, will review key data for trucking fleets, such as industrial and manufacturing output by segment and the key drivers of freight transportation.

Costello said some of the questions the report and webinar will answer include:

  • How will the nation's staggering economy shape the future of trucking?
  • Will trucking continue its growth as the dominant mode of freight transportation?
  • What is the forecast for domestic tonnage and revenue?
  • What manufacturing segments should grow and which ones are expected to shrink?
  • What is the outlook for consumer spending as well as trade volumes?

The forecast can be purchased at ATAbusinesssolutions.com or by calling 866-821-3468 (toll free).
