Slumping Sales Spur Cummins Job Cuts

Dec 1, 2000 12:00 PM, MODERN BULK TRANSPORTER STAFF

Diesel engine maker Cummins Inc plans to cut another 350 jobs this year.

Workforce reductions are due to a drop in demand for engines in the North American heavy-duty truck market, said Tim Solso, Cummins chairman and chief executive officer.

"We are continuing to look at every option we have to restructure our heavy-truck engine business," Solso said. "This includes delaying or canceling projects, focusing on other cost reduction activities across all of our business units, and rethinking how we participate in the heavy-truck engine market."

Cummins has reduced its staff in the engine business by nearly 900 employees since the year began, according to Solso.
