Mar 1, 2002 12:00 PM

Each year during Christmas week, Opies Transport Inc recognizes one outstanding driver from its fleet of 125 drivers. Recipient of the 2001 Driver of the Year award was Don Allen of Eldon MO, who has worked for Opies since May 1989. Allen was chosen based upon his years of service and the fact that he has never had a chargeable accident while driving for the company. He was awarded a trip for two to Cancun, Mexico.

John Gladden of Iberia MO was selected as January 2001 Missouri Driver of the Month, an award sponsored by the Missouri Motor Carriers Association. Gladden was judged on driving ability, professionalism, safety record, number of accident-free miles, and service to his community while serving the transportation industry. He has logged 3.5 million miles in his 30-year driving career and has driven 1.8 million miles since his employment with Opies in 1985.

Other Opies employees honored include Alan Opie of Eldon. This journeyman mechanic was recognized for 10 years of employment and received a $1,000 cash bonus.

Local farm route driver Herman “Junior” Foley was recognized for 30 years of service. Employed by Opies since October 1971, the Eldon resident received a trip for two to Jamaica.
