13,000 Mexican Permit Requests Expected

Jun 1, 2001 12:00 PM

United States regulators expect to receive 13,000 applications to operate Mexican trucks in the United States as plans move forward to open fully the border by the end of the year, according to a report by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

Julie Cirillo, acting deputy administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, expects about a quarter of those applications will seek operating authority beyond border-area commercial zones already open to Mexican trucking, OOIDA reported.

Currently, some 9,000 Mexican trucking companies have authority to operate in the commercial zones.
