The state of Illinois gave International Truck and Engine Corp two environmental awards at its Melrose Park Engine Plant and Technical Center in suburban Chicago recently: one for innovation, a second for continuous improvement.

Illinois Department of Natural Resource Chicago liaison Laura Perna and Waste Management Resource Center Director George Vander Velde honored International with the Innovate Illinois Award. The award is for the firm's Green Diesel Technology engine, which uses a catalyzed diesel particulate filter with low sulfur fuel to cut diesel emissions/odor and boost operating efficiency for trucks and buses.

For the tenth time in 11 years, International received the Governor's Pollution Prevention — Continuous Improvement Award acknowledging ongoing initiatives in reducing pollution. The firm continues to reduce solvent use, waste coolant losses, oily waste, and energy use. These efforts resulted in plant savings of $720,000 in 2002, up $389,064 from 2001.

The Melrose Park facility is headquarters for the International Engine Group, Engine Engineering, and in-line six-cylinder diesel engine manufacturing.
