CLIFF Harvison, National Tank Truck Carriers president, received the 2001 George L Wilson Award from the Hazardous Materials Advisory Council (HMAC).

Harvison was recognized for his work in HMAC and for his longtime dedication to the development and understanding of national and international regulations, promotion of improved and safer response to hazmat incidents, and advancement of public knowledge about hazmat transportation safety.

Harvison received the award November 9, 2001, in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the HMAC annual conference. In presenting the award, Alan Roberts, HMAC president, said, “He is effective because of the strength of his arguments, and because of the reputation he has earned as a straight shooter. In fact, any industry or government leader in the hazardous materials community today already knows about Cliff's dedication and efforts, including his continuing support for the Hazardous Materials Advisory Council.”

Harvison has participated in HMAC activities since the organization's inception 25 years ago, served on the board of directors, and was HMAC chairman in 1979. He joined NTTC in 1965 and became president in 1972.

Harvison is the 18th recipient of the HMAC award that is presented in memory of the organization's first president, George Wilson. A recipient's past activities must have been characterized by performance well beyond the normal expectations of industry, Roberts said.

HMAC changes its name

Starting Jan 1, 2002, the Hazardous Materials Advisory Council will be called the Dangerous Goods Advisory Council. According to the group, the new name reflects a more global attitude, since the United States is the only country that uses the term “hazardous materials.”
