Correction for headline in March issue of MBT

May 1, 2003 12:00 PM

A headline in the March issue of Modern Bulk Transporter was incorrect. In the coverage of a Cooperative Hazardous Materials Enforcement Development (COHMED) conference held January 12 in Houston TX, the headline said the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is planning a carrier hazmat registration fee. The agency is not planning a registration fee, as the article stated. Here is the correct information taken from the article:

Another federal permit requirement for hazmat carriers is in the works through FMCSA, according to data presented January 14 at a COHMED training conference in Houston.

The trucking industry has just received a three-year reduced rate for hazmat registration from the Research and Special Programs Administration, only to learn that another Department of Transportation agency registration is likely to be initiated. However, the FMCSA proposal would not include a fee for the registration, said William Quade, FMCSA hazmat division chief.
