CEF Salutes Awareness/Response Committees

Award-winning community awareness and emergency planning/response committees were honored by the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF) in Dallas TX recently.

A first-place tie created the special award category of Sustaining Superior Performance, awarded to Iberville Parish I-CAER (Community Awareness and Emergency Response) Committee of Plaquemine LA, which previously won the 1997 CEF Community Award. Also tied for first place, Beach Cities CAER of Torrance CA, received the Community Award for 2000. Honorable mentions were awarded to Delaware County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) of Media PA, and Spartanburg County Risk Management Planning Task Force/LEPC of Spartanburg SC.

Iberville Parish I-CAER Committee coordinates with more than 14 chemical companies, such as PCS Nitrogen, Dow Chemical Co, and Delta Distributors Inc. Beach Cities CAER programs are sponsored by ExxonMobil, Dow Chemical, Union Carbide Corp, the Torrance Fire Department, and Torrance United School District. Delaware County LEPC works with more than a dozen chemical companies, including Sunoco Chemicals and Air Products and Chemicals. Spartanburg County Risk Management Planning Task Force/LEPC represents eight chemical companies including Sybron Chemicals, ABCO Industries, BASF Corp, and Van Waters & Rogers Inc.
