Surface trade with Canada and Mexico up

Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was 6.8% higher this past May compared with May 2007, reaching $74.1 billion, reported the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail, and pipeline.
About 88% of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moves on land.
U.S.-Canada surface transportation trade totaled $48.9 billion in May, up 10.5% over May 2007. The top 10 trading states with Canada, ranked by May 2008 surface trade value, were: Michigan, Illinois, New York, California, Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, Washington, Minnesota, and Indiana.
U.S.-Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $25.2 billion, up 0.2%. The top 10 states trading with Mexico, in order, were: Texas, California, Michigan, Arizona, Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, New York, and Pennsylvania.
