Web offers milk haulers marketing edge

Milk transporters can use the Internet to improve their marketing ability, according to Hill Pratt of dairy.com.

He discussed bidding processes available to milk haulers through the use of dairy.com's three programs: spot exchange, scheduling platforms, and a collaborative milk scheduling system.

The presentation was made at the International Milk Haulers Association annual meeting April 24-26 in Nashville TN.

"There is an opportunity that is good for the industry--to fill those empty miles," he said.

By using the Internet and the dairy.com program, milk transporters have access to many different dairy manufacturers.

When a manufacturer requires specific transportation, an e-mail goes out to all the subscriber transporters, who can then bid on the load.

The process speeds up the transactions for the perishable food market where time is critical.
