California's state legislators are considering a bill (SB1675) that would mandate all diesel fuel sold or offered for sale in the state to contain at least two-to-five percent biodiesel by 2008 and five precent by 2010, according to California Assembly information.

The bill, approved by the Senate in June and now in the Assembly Committee on Transporation, is designed to encourage the use of alternative fuels, such as biodiesel, and other renewable diesel fuels that are emerging in the market place, according to information from the office of Sen Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego), sponsor of the measure.

The action, if eventually approved, would increase the amount of renewable diesel from five million gallons that were consumed in 2005 in California to 61 million gallons by 2008, and 164 million gallons by 2010, the Kehoe information said.
