A safe reliable hazardous materials systems requires a partnership that includes the public sector, hazmat shippers such as chemical manufacturers, and railroads, Tom Schick, American Chemistry Council (ACC) distribution director, testified recently in a Department of Transportation hearing.
His remarks were part of a presentation by the ACC and the Chlorine Institute that noted America depends on a safe, reliable hazardous material (hazmat) transportation system that allows the nation to continue to create essential products and provide essential services in health, technology, transportation, security, defense, housing, recreation, and virtually every sector of the economy.
“Chemicals are essential for the life of the nation, including some materials that are hazardous,” Schick said. “The goal of the hazardous material transportation system is to ensure these products are delivered safely and reliably, and not to prevent their movement.”
