The Oklahoma Trucking Association (OTA) and Oklahoma Safety Management Council (OSMC) announced their winners for the 2009 Fleet Safety Awards in Oklahoma City recently.

The 2009 Grand Trophy, presented by Great West Casualty Company, was awarded to Hamm & Phillips Service Co of Enid OK. Hamm & Phillips Service Co is a subsidiary of Complete Production Services and was founded in 1966 by Harold Hamm.

Oklahoma City resident Danny Byars, from Oklahoma Tank Lines–United Petroleum Transports, was selected as 2009 Oklahoma Driver of the Year. Throughout Byars’ 25 years as a professional driver, he has accumulated more than 2,748,450 accident-free miles. He and his wife, Pauline, are active volunteers for the community, helping with organizations such as the United Way and Positive Tomorrows and providing mentoring and scholarships for local youth/high school soccer leagues.

OTA member companies are eligible to apply for the Fleet Safety Awards, and the placement is chosen by the lowest accident frequency rating in Oklahoma. If the company places in their division category, it then becomes eligible for the Grand Trophy award. This award is chosen by three judges from various law enforcement agencies and is based on the company’s overall safety performance record, safety plan, hiring practices, and outside council involvement. OTA member companies can also submit a nomination packet for a driver who the company believes has gone above and beyond the call of duty for consideration as an Oklahoma Professional Driver.
